Christopher (Chris) Doherty is 12 years old. He’s the son of John and Debbie Doherty, and the brother of John III. Chris was diagnosed in June, 2007 with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Chris is a student at St. Symphorosa grammar school on the Southwest side of Chicago. Before being diagnosed with cancer, Chris was a member of the St. Symphorosa Vikings football and soccer teams and school band. He also enjoys most sports, paint ball and video games and hopes to rejoin his Viking teammates soon.

Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, Chris underwent emergency surgery to remove a severe infection in his hip. Chris was hospitalized for several days and had a catheter inserted in to his heart so the medication could be administered. Chris was eventually released home where he had to undergo six additional weeks of intravenous medication and receive home health care to make sure the infection was gone. During treatment Chris noticed that a lump had developed under his armpit and had to endure numerous tests and scans including two separate surgeries to remove and biopsy the mass. In addition to the surgeries, Chris had to undergo several MRI, CT and PET scans to help diagnose the mass, and once the results were back the news was devastating. The doctors said that the lump was a series of inflamed lymph nodes and Chris was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Chris immediately began cancer treatments enduring months of intense chemotherapy. In addition to the chemotherapy, Chris had to take a barrage of other medications as a course of his treatment. After his treatment session ended, Chris underwent several additional CT and PET scans. The results of those scans revealed that the mass, although reduced in size had not gone away. Chris required an additional surgery in order to completely remove the mass. After the mass was removed Chris went back for two weeks of additional chemotherapy to make sure the cancer was gone.

Medical bills for Chris’ multiple surgeries, hospital visits, chemotherapy treatments, bone marrow tests, MRI(s), CT and PET scans are enormous. Although his parents have insurance, they may exceed the maximum lifetime family benefit. In order to help relieve the financial stress and to help ease the overwhelming medical bills they have and will incur, friends and family are hosting a fund raising event called Kickn4Chris.
